Abbreviations, Medical Specialties,Qualifications & Medical Eponyms
The interactive learning material in this unit is arranged into sets of flashcards to enhance memorization of abbreviations, understand the fields of common medical specialties and understand the meaning of medical eponyms; there is an introduction and seven sections:
Introduction
The abbreviations (acronyms) listed in these exercises have been extracted from recent health care publications and from lists of recommended learning materials for medical terminology.
Students should be aware that whilst certain abbreviations are standard, others are not and their meaning may vary from one health care setting to another. Abbreviations with several meanings should be carefully interpreted in their context to avoid confusion. Note only a small selection of common abbreviations are listed here
How to use the FlashCards
To use these flashcards effectively flip through the specialties and abbreviations guessing or reading their meanings. Then start at the beginning again and test your ability to remember each one. If you reach one you cannot remember stop, check its meaning and start the exercise again by clicking Home. This will reinforce the meanings of abbreviations already learnt and prompt you to remember the unfamiliar ones. Repeat this process until you can expand all of the abbreviations and specialties.
Medical specialties
A single set of FlashCards listing the names of the main medical specialties.
Remember: -ics = art /science of, -logy = study of, -iatry means treatment by a doctor

Just use this exercise to familiarize yourself with some of the eponyms that are in use in the health care environment.
Note there are long lists of eponymous diseases to be found on the web for example on Wikipedia.
